Check your links!

A reminder to you all to always check your site regularly as a visitor would, not off your HD.

I checked mine for the first time in a while yesterday and found that one of the most important pages of the site, where people can send their own content, was not working as my account to bravenet had been cancelled.

I don't know how long this page wasn't functioning and therefore may have missed out on new content for my site!

Heh, and check the notifications from services you might have. I had a guestbook from the same company disguised as a mourning book (don't know how to translate that, you get what I mean I hope), and it was supposed to notify me every time someone wrote something. A newsletter to me bounced hence the company decided my mail address wasn't valid hence I didn't get any notifications anymore. Just then someone abused the book to advertise some porn, something I noticed only a few days later...

My HTML coding suite (Homesite) has link validation built right in, so it's fairly easy for me to check things on a regular basis (even on a 100+ page site), but with parts of my site hosted on a couple different servers, it is still important to check things on a regular basis, just to make sure everything is up and running properly.

I have a number of key pages all put into a bookmark folder, and because I use a tabbed browser, with one click I can bring up all the pages that need checking at once. It's a weekly routine. Invariably, the week I don't check, is the week that something goes wrong.

So, what you say is an important overall tip. It can be a bit tedious, but the larger your site becomes, and the more traffic it sustains, the more neccessary it is to keep checking things on a regular basis.

Never tried it, but here is one, and otherwise a Google Search provides a bunch.
